The walk starts in the picturesque village of Gilling East. A single-track farm road is followed for approximately a mile and a half, where there are open views to the Howardian Hills and much of the route can be seen. The route then changes direction and heads for the village of Ampleforth over woodland and farmland. Following on from Ampleforth are the extensive grounds of Ampleforth College, after which the route retraces the early parts of the walk.
