Our walk takes us along the path beside the River Irthing, then up to Irthing House and up onto the hill, where some magnificent views can be had. We then drop down into the beautiful woodlands of the Gilsland Spa and along to the 'Popping Stone', where legend has it Sir Walter Scott proposed to his sweetheart. Returning along the banks to the Spa Hotel, refreshments can be enjoyed before dropping to the stepping-stones crossing the Irthing and retracing our footsteps to Gilsland.

This is a beautiful but easy walk. The section in the woods is particularly lovely and the area around the Popping Stone a nice place to eat your snack. Please note that there is no longer a Post Office in Gilsland. It is best to park on Gilsland Village car park which is outside the village next to the school or at Gilsland Hall Hotel.
