From the roadside parking the route climbs gently over heather and grass, following paths and tracks for about 3km. A small burn has to be crossed twice but there are ample stepping-stones. As the ascent of Ben Tirran begins, the climb steepens and the paths disappear. The 5km section over Ben Tirran and around the top of the corrie is over rough grass and eroded peat with no obvious path and can be boggy in places after wet weather. The descent provides spectacular views to Loch Wharral in the corrie below and down the length of Glen Clova. The higher section is very exposed, so go well-prepared even in summer. This area has an abundance of red deer, mountain hares, red grouse and birds of prey.
