Glen Doll - Broad Cairn - Cairn Bannoch - Jock's Road - Glen Doll
From the picnic area at Glen Doll, the route follows the River South Esk high into upper Glen Clova to the picturesque area of Bachnagairn, whence a steep climb on a good path leads out onto the Mounth Plateau with views to Lochnagar and down to Loch Muick. On easily followed paths for most of the way, the route climbs over the rocky-topped Munros of Broad Cairn and Cairn Bannoch to reach the remote top of Fafernie, a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The high moorland area from Cairn Bannoch across Fafernie and down towards the head of Glen Doll is exposed and featureless and requires careful navigation in poor weather. A faint path climbs gently along a grassy ridge to reach the rocky outcrop on Crow Craigies, the final hill of the day. From here a more obvious path, but rocky in places, descends gently into upper Glen Doll to reach Davy's Bourach, a basic shelter nestling below Cairn Lunkard. Beyond the shelter a well-constructed path descends quite steeply into the narrow valley to reach Glen Doll Forest. The route follows a wide path through the shady forest to reach a vehicle track leading to the finish at Glen Doll car park.
