Leaving from the church and the wonderful old Chequers Inn, we start by making our way westwards through wide-open countryside and later pass through an area of lakes, once sand quarries. After a short stretch along the Maldon road, we make our way down towards Mill Beach and begin the delightful ramble along the northern shore of the Blackwater River (this part is the same as on 5361). There is the option to divert to visit Heybridge Basin, which is worth the effort if time allows. Opposite we pass Northey and Osea Islands before, all too soon, reaching Goldhanger Creek. Now we have only to leave the coastal path and make our way back into the charming village of Goldhanger.

Beautiful atmospheric walk for a misty autumn day - the extension to the Heybridge Basin and Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation is well worth it. I imagine this would be a very popular walking area in the summer, with numerous excellent looking pubs but in semi-lockdown Autumn there was a great sense of isolation and beautiful wading bird-song including curlew, redshank etc.All directions good and easy to follow.
