From the National Park car park at Gradbach this walk rises across the ridge above the Dane Valley, with views across Cheshire to Merseyside and the Welsh hills. Eventually you drop down to Gig Hall and two delightful weirs on the river. The return follows the Dane Valley back to Gradbach, alternating between Staffordshire and Cheshire either side of the river; a fine walk in the Western Peak District.

A short cut can be taken making a 5.9-mile loop.

11/28/2020 - Simon Worrall

Walked November 2020. With a couple of short stops for coffee and lunch we completed it in 4 hours. A delightful walk with some great views. The first half of the walk takes in Hanging Stone (recommend you read the plaques on the lower part of the stones as you descend) and some interesting farmsteads, a mill and other old properties, many associated with Swythamley Hall. The second half, from WP13, closely follows the River Dane along the valley bottom and rises up into mature woodland for the final section still tracking the river down below in the gorge. CAR PARKING: The car park at Gradbach is now managed by Staffordshire Wildlife Trust (called The Roaches Car Park). It is free to park but gets very busy / full even during the week so get there early! There are no other places to legally park in Gradbach as the roads in and out are so narrow. However there are a few parking spots on the road near the bridge at Wincle opposite the entrance to the brewery so you could start from here (between WP14/15) and do a circuit missing out the section between WP1 and WP3. REFRESHMENTS: There is a small cafe and toilet near the Mill in Gradbach WP2 but it is closed during the winter months. The brewery at Wincle is currently open 7 days a week for tastings and bottle purchases.
