The paths are all quite firm so this circular walk can be enjoyed at any time of the year, however for most enjoyment go when leaves are on the trees and the splendour of the Mersey Valley Timberland Trail (long canal path); and tree lined Trans Pennine Trail (old railway route), are looking at their best. There are no gates, stiles or narrow foot bridges on this route and only one wide and short flight of steps. You can enjoy fields of animals across the canal, there are none for you to walk through, and also observe and admire all the moored boats along the canal (see photo on the right). Apart from a gently half-way slope the route is quite flat and easy walking. The section of the return route section alongside the ship canal is a bit of a pavement bash, but if you are very lucky you may be rewarded by the sight of a ship following you alongside the path. This walk includes instructions for walkers from moored canal boats.
The walk is suitable for children, teenagers, senior citizens and anyone in-between. Excellent for dogs and buggies, but difficult for wheelchairs. Suitable footwear will be anything flat soled, but boots will be best in winter as some sections of path may be a bit muddy. In summer there should be no problems for anyone wearing shorts. On your route there are no picnic tables, but bench seats are scattered along the old canal tow path. At the start and finish there are toilets, food, and refreshments available at the pub. If you book in advance, you should be able to get a good meal with your pint; an excellent finish to a good walk.
