This is a fairly easy, level walk, mainly in open countryside, also visiting the famous Old Blacksmith's Shop, the Village Outlet - and the scene of Britain's biggest railway disaster:
'No wreaths to commemorate our glory day,
Nor tears to be shed on this permanent
way.
Just 'Flowers of the Forest' for youth in
their prime
For the piper's lament stills the passage
of time.
No wreaths and no sorrow as memories
unfold,
Just eternity's promise
'They shall never grow old'.
Diverting a short distance left along the pavement from the Border Reivers information board after Waymark 23 would lead you down to 'The Last House in Scotland', behind which will be found a newly-assembled cairn by 'Hands Across the Border' and celebrating the Union of Scotland and England. It is also close to the start and finish point of this walk.
You will pass a pub or two en route and there are more refreshment facilities at the finish.
Information for Dog Owners: dogs will need to be on the leash in town and on
stretches of rural road-walking.
