The North York Moors has some fantastic scenery, not to mention the wonders of steam rail travel. This walk takes you from the northerly station on the North York Moors Railway (Grosmont) south to Goathland station, without using the rail trail route.

To many, Goathland will be better known as "Aidensfield" from the TV program "Heartbeat", indeed some familiar views will be passed on route. The walk also passes an unusual pub in Beck Hole, famous for the size of its bar - a must stop if time permits before the train.

The route takes the walker from Grosmont to Goathland, and returns via steam, however an alternative walking route is proposed as well.

Grosmont to Goathland walk is well-served by public transport not just the North Yorks Moors Railway. Grosmont is served by National Rail Middlesbrough-Whitby line. There is also a local bus betweenb Whitby and Grosmont. Goathland is on the quality Yorkshire Coastliner route 840 bus route Leeds-York-Malton-Pickering-Whitby. A good day out from Whitby is train to Grosmont; walk to Goathland; 840 bus back to Whitby. This itinerary can of course be reversed. JS Waring
