From the Blaen-y-cwm picnic area follow the Grwyne Fawr valley, passing the reservoir to the northern escarpment of the Black Mountains, then take a wide ridge to the highest point of the Black Mountains before a steep descent by waterfalls.

20.5.15 a magnifiicent walk improved by an engineered path along the ridge from Pen y Gadair Fawr to Waun Fach; mostly gravel, some stone. Material to extend it to Pen y Manllwyn is being assembled. This removes all concern about boggy terrain and navigation in mist. Purists who deprecate the scar on the landscape neglect the growing and useless spread of attempts to avoid the bog. I actually did this walk in reverse after reading a guide book. My ancient knees prefer the ascent to descent, and you cover the exposed [to wind] ridge before the easy return via the reservoir.
