This is Part 1 of the Hadrian's Wall walk from Bowness-on-Solway to Wallsend. This section takes us from Bowness to Carlisle and is long but relatively flat.
With the westerly breeze on our backs, we set off from Bowness-on-Solway to pass through Port Carlisle, Glasson and Drumburgh with its castle, a fortified house with Roman altar stones as garden ornaments. A long coastal road stretch with views over the Solway takes us to Burgh by Sands, standing on the Roman fort of Aballava and with the church of St Michael's within the boundary of the fort.
We continue through Beaumont, where the church was built by the Normans using stone from the wall and a Roman inscription can be seen in the wall opposite Hilltop Cottage. From here on, our route graces the banks of the River Eden for a short spell before passing through Kirkandrews on Eden.
After a section through meadowland we rejoin the banks of the Eden that lead us into Carlisle, passing the remains of an industrial area before reaching the recreation ground and formal park of Carlisle Castle, finishing for the day at the Sands Centre.
