We leave Lanercost Priory to rejoin the wall and walk along to Banks. From here on, we see many pieces of wall remains, turrets and milecastles, as we make our way to Birdoswald Roman Fort.

After a chance to look around it, we carry on to see the remains of Willowford Roman Bridge and Milecastle before reaching Gilsland. The next stretch shows the visible ditches alongside the wall as we walk to Thirlwall Castle, the remains of the 14th Century moated castle built with stone from the wall.

From here a steady climb takes us up to Walltown Army Museum, with some lovely views looking back along the route.

This was a lovely walk on a warm August day. The directions were spot on, and full marks for suggesting the use of the local bus, but in no way can the final climb back to Walltown be described as gentle. This section was a real slog! Steven Thompson
