This walk has a bit of everything. It starts and finishes at a car park area by an old church. It goes up some urban roads towards an old square before ascending towards the moors via an old lane. It then climbs Brown Hill and Brown Wardle hills. After descending to Little Middle Hill the route follows paths to reach some more urban roads before a short climb to Cowm Reservoir. It follows the eastern bank of the reservoir before returning along a bridleway, part of which was an old tramway, above the reservoir to the start point. It follows part of the Rossendale Way. There are examples of old farmsteads along the way. There are a number of listed buildings in Whitworth, several of which you pass.

Because you walk along both sides of a valley there are two high points, although there is a difference of about 150 metres in height. There are a number of paths around the hills which are not shown on maps. Although this walk is based in Lancashire it adds to the string of walks to the north of Rochdale, stretching from Norden around to Milnrow.
