The start of the walk, at the car park for Wallasey Grove Road train station, is identical to walk 5456. In fact as far as the promenade it can be the same, though the waypoints here take you over the railway line at the station, past St Nicholas's church before joining the other walk towards the promenade wall.
This time we turn west - left - towards Wales, the hills of which will be clearly visible in fine weather. Also in common with walk 5456, you may walk virtually the entire distance on the beach (tides permitting), though a good path exists along the top of the sea wall, albeit less grand than New Brighton's promenade.
In summer there are lifeguards positioned along the coast, and it is possible to walk quite far out on the sand banks when the tide is out but - a word of warning: ensure you can reach your destination before Low Water, i.e. before the tide starts to come in, as the unwary can be cut off.
Herons are frequent visitors to the foreshore, and the walk passes through reedbeds approaching West Kirby, so a variety of birds & butterflies can reward the observant walker.
West Kirby boasts an often changing but always eclectic mixture of restaurants, cafés & bars... And a Wetherspoons. It is possible to combine a trip to Hilbre (WW-1738), but tides will control whether this is possible on your chosen day.
