Starting at the car park for Wallasey Grove Road train station, you walk up an imperceptible rise until the road goes over the railway line and you see Liverpool Bay spread before you, the hills of Wales to your left, Formby Point ahead and running south from that, the coast of Crosby and northern Liverpool. The promenade lies ahead with large green spaces; apart from an uninteresting development initially on your right there is nothing but space from the railway line out to the impressive sea wall. Periodically fairs are held on some of the land, but it is usually just used as space...
If you arrive at low tide you can walk along the beach and it may be hard to believe that during stormy high tides, waves regularly splash right over onto the road. If you choose to walk on the beach you can do so all the way to New Brighton – there are easy paths over the groynes. Irregular small piles of darker mud dotting the shore are the result of a cottage industry; no longer do they dig for black lugworms when the sand is wet: bait pumps are more efficient.
Either from the beach or the promenade you can approach - and even walk around the outside – Fort Perch Rock at New Brighton. It is now an interesting museum of aircraft wreck recovery in private hands, certainly not as slick as the Tate, but none the worse for that!
New Brighton marks the start of the River Mersey proper and as you turn south the familiar Liverpool skyline is visible.
