This is a lovely walk that explores the rolling hills around the village of Hartest and also the nearby estate of Boxted Hall. The route starts by heading up a small hill for lovely views over the surrounding countryside. The path then following quiet country lanes to another path that leads you through open fields in the direction of Boxted Church which can be seen hidden in the trees. The route to Boxted Church is largely along footpaths with the odd section of country lane walking and is delightful all the way. Once at the church you are on a slight hill looking down to the river and Boxted Hall.
Boxted Hall is a beautiful moated manor house dating from the 14th century. Being set back from the road and with the adjoining river feeding the moat makes the area rich with wildlife. The parish church us just a few hundred yards from the Hall and dates from 1224 and worth a little exploration if you enjoy churches.
The return route follows a path through open fields and then along the river itself before taking footpaths back to hartest.
