A circular walk starting from the Hawkley Inn, the route takes you on a tour of the beautiful hangers - the local name for the wooded slopes. Although a little hilly in places, there are no nasty climbs but plenty of marvellous views to be seen. Leaving the pub in an easterly direction across fields with far-reaching views, you descend through the woods circling the hanger through Countryside Commission land and walk through The Beeches, climbing to Mabbotts. Here you take the delightful sunken track called Standfast Lane which brings you to Hawkley Hurst, where you cross the River Rother, walking tracks and quiet lanes to Vann Farm. Leaving the lane, you take the Hangers Way through Hawkley Hanger to bring you to the village green, where you will see the Church of St Peter and St Paul with its distinctive diamond-shaped spire and ancient yew trees. A short walk takes you back to the pub where you will have a very warm welcome, log fire, seven real ales, two draught ciders and a very good menu of delicious home-cooked food. Those of you who have dogs may find it useful to know that my dog, a slim, fit Labrador who cannot jump, managed all the stiles without difficulty except for one between Waymarks 4 and 5, where we had to lift him over.
