The walk starts from the village of Hawnby and takes one of the roads out, leading to All Saints Church, which has its origins in the 12th Century. Following the road leads to a bridge over the River Rye and it is worth stopping and enjoying this tranquil spot. The walk then heads off the road and through woodland, skirting around Coombe Hill. This leads to Arden Hall, an imposing mansion set amongst trees.

From here, the route ascends Arden Bank, although it is on good terrain, a quiet road, it is quite a moderate climb lasting for approximately fifteen minutes. At the top is an ideal spot to stop for a picnic and enjoy the views of the wooded valley of Thorodale and the North York Moors. From here, the route goes over farmland and passes through Gowerdale, a wooded valley. The route then passes through Daletown, where there are excellent views of Hawnby, Hawnby Hill, Easterside Hill and beyond. Shortly before reaching Hawnby, the route passes over the River Rye and there are a couple of areas to sit and enjoy the sounds of the river before arriving at the start of the walk.
