This walk has a bit of everything. It starts and finishes in a local nature reserve. It goes uphill through woodland. It follows moorland tracks and parts of a long-distance walk. There is a section across open country with no visible tracks. There are examples of old farmsteads along the way. The first section of the Rossendale Way (setted section) is along the ‘Cotton Famine Road’ (see additional info'). After leaving the first section of the Rossendale Way it crosses a small stream via a ford and passes a farm outbuilding before crossing an open stretch of land. It then follows the course of a second stream before rejoining the Rossendale Way. After leaving the Rossendale Way the walk follows a river back to the start.
Although this walk is based in Lancashire it completes a string of walks to the north of Rochdale stretching from Norden around to Milnrow.
There can be a number of dog-walkers around Healey Dell but the upper reaches are less populated with other walkers.
