This route starts at Helmshore Textile Mills Museum in Helmshore and follows a disused railway line towards Holden Wood Reservoir. The reservoir is walked alongside before climbing past a farm to reach the Rossendale Way (RW). The Rossendale Way is followed anti-clockwise to reach a farm (Great House). From this point the walk drops down towards the start point, passing some large properties to reach the disused railway line, which is followed back to the start point.

The walk is a mixture of a cycle route, footpaths, farm tracks and some suburban streets. Along the RW there are eight boggy or muddy sections (streams) which are crossed used stepping-stones or bypassed by climbing slightly uphill (between Waymarks 10 and 11). There are another four boggy or muddy sections (streams) which are crossed used stepping-stones or bypassed by climbing slightly uphill (between Waymarks 11 and 12). The beginning and end sections are along a disused railway line. There are two high points on this walk.
