An interesting walk through an undulating area just to the west of the city of Sunderland. The walk features a country park, two iconic viewing hills and a long, pleasant riverside walk along a tidal section of the River Wear.
This undulating and varied walk starts from Herrington Country Park, that was created on the site of a former coal mine. On leaving the park the route climbs up onto Penshaw Hill, an outstanding viewing point where the iconic folly known as Penshaw Monument is sited. The route then descends through fields and woods to intersect the River Wear at the picturesque hamlet of Cox Green. For the next 2.25 miles the walk follows the pleasant riverside path along this tidal part of river. Shortly after the river enters a gorge, the walk rises from the river to pass through the quiet village of Offerton. A little unavoidable road-walking then follows that leads to another (optional) viewing point on Hastings Hill. The final section of the walk is through fields, a small area of housing, a quiet lane and last but not least, a ramble through the thoughtfully laid out Herrington Country Park with its lakes and great network of paths for a return to the car park.
