An easy to follow walk that includes a broad spectrum of terrain types. The route, that starts from the quiet village of Hett in the historically interesting area just to the south-east of Durham City includes villages, fields, lanes, roads and delightful woods. The walk does include several ascents and descents but other than the climb up through Butterby Wood, none are too strenuous.

From the charming duck-pond village of Hett, the route travels through fields to arrive at and cross the main East Coast railway line at Hett Mill. Pleasant meadow-walking follows that crosses a disused railway line, a busy 'A' road and a motorway to arrive at the village of Parkhill. A delightful bridleway walk ends with a recrossing of the motorway to skirt around Bowburn Village. From here another pleasant bridleway takes the walker alongside the motorway, then through fields and woods before intersecting the charming old village of Shincliffe, where the walk intersects the Weardale Way long-distance footpath. The route follows the Weardale Way along a charming lane then up through Butterby Wood, after which it hugs the edge of both Butterby Wood and Croxdale Wood before entering the ancient hamlet that surrounds Croxdale Hall. The final lap of the walk descends into and rises out of Annie's Wood to recross the main railway line before arriving back into Hett Village.
