An interesting walk in the Tyne and Wear area just south of Sunderland. The route includes a walk around Hetton Lyons Country Park and a visit to Copt Hill, a local panoramic viewing point and ancient burial mound, as well as passing close by and overlooking one the country's best go-karting venues. The terrain includes a little urban walking at the start with a good mix of field-, road-, lane- and railway path walking to end.
The walk starts from the popular Hetton Lyons Country Park, then passes through a residential area of Hetton-le-Hole to emerge at the historic Copt Hill, commanding a panoramic view over Houghton-le-Spring and the Durham hills to the west. The route then skirts along the eastern edge of Houghton-le-Spring before turning east to pass through a very wide, shallow valley that leads up to Warden Law. From here there are more great panoramic views looking to the north and to the east across to Sunderland and the coast. The walk also passes and overlooks the north-east's premier go-karting venue at Warden Law before a little road-walking both on and off pavements. Lane- and field-walking then follows as the route passes through an area where wind turbines are a prominent feature. The final part of the route is easy lane- and railway path-walking to re-enter the Hetton Lyons Park from the south.
