Maldon is a picturesque town and has been important for sailmaking and the production of sea salt for many years. In 991 Anglo-Danish troops were defeated by Viking invaders camped on Northey Island, which you pass on your walk to reach the battle site itself. You also pass a 13th Century church with a triangular tower, the only one of its kind in England. At the Hythe, the quay at the eastern end of the town, you will pass a number of the robust and beautiful sailing vessels known as Thames barges, used for trade on the east coast in the last century. You can then see Beeleigh Abbey with its historic connections and modern-day peacocks. The walk back is also unique in the complications of the different water channels along and across which you pass. At the end of your walk you can sit in or outside The Old Ship Inn and contemplate the sea, the canal and much of the walk you have previously undertaken whilst imagining the past hustle and bustle of your location, in complete tranquillity today.
