The walk starts near Queens Park in Heywood. It can be split into three sections. The first section starts by leaving the start point to walk down and alongside a river before starting the climb to the first high point. This climb is about eighty metres over a distance of about two kilometres. The second section drops down to walk above a brook and through woodland to reach the hamlet of Ashworth Fold. After walking through the hamlet the route crosses some fields to reach a second woodland area with a brook running through it. After crossing the brook there is a shorter climb to reach a path crossing the hillside. This path is followed to reach an access road for a farm. This road is then followed past the farm to reach a road, which is then followed to the hamlet of Birtle. The last section passes through the hamlet before following a bridleway to reach a major road. After crossing the road there is a third area of woodland which is crossed to reach the river you walked along in the first section. The river is followed upstream to pass a weir and the confluence of a brook with the river. After leaving the river the walk continues up a road and past a small industrial area to reach the start point. The majority of the walk is in countryside. There are also toilets and a café in Queens Park, opposite the start point. You pass a number of properties over 100 years old, in some areas even older. This walk can be combined with three other walks as follows: 7905 Heywood Circular, 7916 Norden - Ashworth Valley-Norden and 7939 Birtle - Deeply Vale - Washwheel Mill - Birtle to make a longer walk of between 17 and 19 kilometres.
