The walk starts near Queens Park in Heywood. The first section goes alongside the River Roch downstream before crossing to the opposite bank via footpaths and an urban road to follow the river upstream through the outskirts of the park. It follows a stream before crossing some fields, above another stream, before following some country lanes to reach Castle Hawk golf course. It goes through the golf course, where careful navigation is required, and crosses a railway line and along a footpath to reach the area of Hopwood. It then follows some urban roads passing through the centre of Heywood before returning to the start. There is a mixture of housing you pass. The majority of the walk is in countryside. There are a number of pubs and several cafes in Heywood town centre. There are also toilets and a café in Queens Park, opposite start point. You pass a number of properties over 100 years old, in some areas even older.
