For a walk of this distance, this one is quite demanding, with two short, quite steep climbs. Some road-walking is required along quiet lanes, though with some short sections on often busy narrow roads.

Most of the walk is along field-paths and tracks. All stiles were present when walked, though one diverted section can develop into a unintended detour if not careful.

The central point of the walk is the village of Ashover and the Black Swan pub. The outer of which was used in a TV medical drama (Peak Practice) series in the late 1990's. There are two other pubs in the village; The Old Poets Corner (formerly Red Lion) which has since become the 'choice' pub in the village and the Crispin Inn which is also popular with walkers. The Black Swan offers a good food selection at reasonable prices and has a choice of hand pulled ales on offer.
