This is a circular walk starting at Hillside Station, although there is plenty of roadside parking available. The walk takes you between Hillside and Royal Birkdale Golf Courses and then across sand-dunes. You briefly join the Trans Pennine Trail and Sefton Coastal Footpath southwards to Ainsdale-on-Sea. Refreshments can be found at The Sands public house, or you can have a picnic at the nature reserve.

The next leg takes you northward along Birkdale Sands before rejoining a stretch of the Trans Pennine Trail and Sefton Coastal Footpath. The route then skirts around the periphery of a residential area and climbs a small hillock with views.

This is a really nice walk with a bit of variety of scenery and instructions were easy to follow. In particular we liked walking on the beach where there was hardly a soul in sight even on a sunny day in August. At point 16 we decided to continue our walk into Southport in search of a cup of tea, I think this was a worthwhile detour up to the pier and then back through Kings Gardens and Victoria Park if you don’t mind adding the extra distance which was about 3 miles

14th July 2013.Lovely little walk. I suggest you drive straight to the golf course, just before you enter the members car-park there is a 'dog walkers' car park on the left (free). Then walk to the left of the clubhouse and you will see the distinctive tree in picture 5.
