The walk leaves the car park area by the visitor centre heading north along part of the Rochdale Way. It climbs to an isolated farmhouse before dropping into and climbing out of a small valley. It then climbs through woodland to reach the hamlet of Whittaker. It leaves Whittaker via a rural road, passing a golf course, to reach the hamlet of Lydgate. It next climbs over a hill to reach one of the main routes (A58) over the Pennines, now superseded by the M62 motorway. After crossing this road the route continues over fields, passing several farms before passing through a small disused industrial area. After leaving this area the route follows a stream to reach the Rochdale Canal, which is followed downstream before climbing over a small hill to return to the start point. It crosses or walks above and alongside a number of streams.
