This lovely walk explores the north side of Honister Pass and heads to one of the best viewpoints for the Newlands Valley, the magnificent Dale Head summit. From this lofty height the views north are excellent down the valley to Skiddaw and to the surrounding fells. The route then descends to the tranquil Dale Head Tarn which is a great place for a stop for lunch.

From there it's a trek through the disused Rigghead Quarries, with several open shafts and levels. Caution is advised on this section! The remains of the quarry buildings are still quite substantial and worth exploring if you have the time. The last stretch is along a high terrace overlooking Borrowdale before starting the ascent to the top of Honister Pass.
