Starting off at the top of Honister Pass, the route is already over 300m above sea level. The route is easy to follow as it ascends along the old tram line up onto the side of Fleetwith. From here it follows a section of the Coast to Coast Path and then turns off to the summit of Brandreth. There are good paths all the way and breathtaking views of Fleetwith Pike, Haystacks, Pillar and the Ennerdale Valley.
From the lofty height of 715m the traverse across to Grey Knotts is easy to navigate as it follows the fence with the summit, being just a short walk from there (can be a bit tricky to find the true summit though!) Grey Knotts offers the walk another perspective on Fleetwith Pike and also onto Hindscarth and Dale Head. The descent is pathless until you reach the Coast to Coast again, but the pathless section is only 500m or so and the target is easy to see in clear weather. A final descent along the tram line brings you back to Honister Pass.
