The Hope Valley Line is part of the Sheffield to Manchester line and must rate among the most scenic stretches of rail in the country. Our walk starts at Hope Station and climbs to Abney Moor, where the views over the Hope Valley to Win Hill, Lose Hill, Mam Tor and Kinder Scout will take away what breath you have left. As you reach the top, you'll be relieved to know that it's pretty much downhill all the way from now on, with only very minor climbs remaining.

From the top of Abney Moor, we drop over the back to the hill village of Abney and on into the beautiful wooded valley of Abney Clough. After passing through a rich variety of woodland, we leave the wood to walk briefly along the valley top, before dropping to Leadmill and a welcome break at the Plough Inn. Here you have a choice: Hathersage Station is just up the road, allowing you to shorten the walk to 6.7 miles, or you can carry on along the banks of the River Derwent to Grindleford Station. In spring, the woodland is carpeted with bluebells and other wildflowers, providing a stunning end to your walk.
