Housesteads to Sewingshields: Beyond the Pax Romana

Because of geology the very best views of Hadrian's Wall in this part of Northumberland are from the north, out beyond where the Pax Romana ruled and where the Selgovae lived. So after a short stretch walking alongside some of the best-preserved parts of the Wall, let's head north into barbarian territory and enjoy a circular walk with great views back to Housesteads. A short part of the walk may be muddy after wet weather.

A really enjoyable walk with great views, not just of the Wall, but all round. The final stretch along the Wall allows a view of much of the route. After the Summer growth there is no sign of a track from Wpt 6 but with just a little care there is no difficulty. In fact we arrived right at the concrete pipes in the beck, but the beck was dry!

This walk is rated easy. I beg to differ. It would be easy to a 20 year old marathon runner, but to this 70 year old it was far from easy. There are quite a few steep climbs, a lot of uneven ground and a lot of boggy ground. That said it was a beautiful walk and, apart from when we were in the vicinity of the wall, we didn’t see a soul. There were skylarks everywhere and we even heard a cuckoo. The views were wonderful. It was simply much harder than expected and took considerably longer than predicted.

Although almost all of this walk can be done off lead this very much depends upon your dogs disposition with livestock. Both sheep and cows will be encountered. If your dog has a tendency to chase then it should be kept on lead at all times. Northumbrian farmers have a reputation for shooting first and asking questions later.
