This is a fairly short, quite demanding walk, particularly in sections on the return. Most of the walk is along field-paths and lanes, though some short sections of road-walking are required. When walked, all stiles were present and markers where present, pointed in more or less the right direction. Though some paths have been slightly diverted close to Hayes Farm, these are clear on the new OL24 map; those using Outdoor Leisure 24 may not have the new routes shown.
The approach to Hayes Farm from Spout Farm can only be described as a bog. This is usually quite wet ground even in dry summer periods, though being sedge there is usually dry firm footing available. There are three streams to cross without footbridges or secure footings; gaiters are a necessity, as is precise map-reading, though even in the worst areas you will only sink to about knee-deep. If not sure of your equipment or map-reading, it is better to avoid this area, thus requiring a little more road-walking.
The pub at the centre of the walk, the Olde Butchers Arms is currently closed. Not sure yet if permanent or for renovation. A remote walker friendly pub will be missed.
