An easy route to follow as most paths connect, with little need to make frequent direction changes; the last section makes most turns to avoid busy roads. Much of the route is on field- or heathland paths. Some road-walking is required on quiet sideroads.
Most of the route is quite easy walking, though some areas can be difficult, in particular the climb from the Manifold Way at Thor's Cave onto Ladyside, starting the approach to Grindon. The old path has been eroded to bedrock and is now difficult, so the National Trust who care for this area have provided an alternative path through woodland to avoid this worn-out path.
The pub originally used on this walk, The Cavalier in Grindon, closed as a pub in 2005 and is now a private residence. Unless using alternative places for refreshements, food and drinks will need to be carried for this route. There is a picnic site area close to a small car park in the vacinity of the church in Grindon with old bench tables, at Waymark 22 of this route.
