The walk starts and finishes at the top of Ibberton Hill, about 770ft above sea level. There is a panoramic view of the patchwork of fields that is the Blackmore Vale – Thomas Hardy's Vale of the Little Dairies – and little changed since Hardy's time. On well-defined paths, the walk gently descends and ascends through beautiful and peaceful Dorset downland, with good views to The Needles on the Isle of Wight, about 34 miles distant.
This part of Dorset is indeed a place that the passing of time has left substantially unchanged, permitting a quiet, unhurried quality of life.
