An interesting walk using some of the less well-known paths in this area, the route is easy to follow and all paths and stiles were present when walked, though there are some steep climbs and descents, mostly when crossing the Manifold Valley Trail.
The section through Musden Wood can become boggy and is often cattle-churned. The area is used for grazing and the cattle often enter the wood for shade and shelter.
Much of the route follows field or woodland paths, with some sections of gravel track. Only short sections of road-walking are required, mostly along quiet village lanes around Wetton. There are several areas offering good views and the opportunity of a slight detour if climbing to Thor's Cave, while climbing from the Manifold Trail to Wetton, there is an alternative higher path so you don't need to descend to the main path again.
The pub originally used on this walk The Cavalier in Grindon closed as a Pub in 2005 and is now a private residence. Unless using alternative places for refreshements food and drinks will need to be carried for this route. There is a picnic site area, close to a small car park in the vicinity of the church in Grindon with old bench tables. If not using this you can miss out Waymark 19. There is a pub The Olde Royal Oak in Wetton which adds about half a mile to the route. To find this continue ahead at waymark 27 and follow path through church yard from entrance for Village Hall. The pub is on right as you exit the church yard.
