Start in Insh Village. Although the old part of the village is on the roadside, by strolling up the quiet main road you pass newer houses hidden by the abundant birchwoods. Beyond the last houses the woods close in, until at an opening on the left, a waymarked trail leads down to the left. The trail is circular and is waymarked throughout, with two opportunities for short cuts. It is described in a clockwise direction, but can be done either way. The trail can be wet underfoot in places. On the return to Insh, a section of the ancient Rathad nam Meirleach is followed, an old road used by drovers and thieves since time immemorial. As the view opens out again over the village of Insh, a grassy way leads down through fields back to the houses and the starting point.

The contrast between the woods, fields and marsh is clear from the aerial view taken in September 1998.
