The walk begins by taking the lakeside path just south of the town and making its way through woodland, before an ascent of the little summit of Castlehead. Well-marked field-paths lead to the stone circle above the town, to which the return is made by lanes and the old railway track.

Two beauty spots and a stone circle make an interesting day out and can be combined with a meal in town and nowadays a visit to the theatre.
