This walk exploits a split in a local long-distance footpath, The Allerdale Ramble. Starting from the popular market town of Keswick, we quickly find ourselves by the tranquil Derwent River, among the water meadows to the south of Bassenthwaite Lake.
The return takes us through Millbeck and Applethwaite - two lovely Lakeland villages and finally back into Keswick itself.
Dog-walkers should note the presence of sheep and cattle and also some awkward stiles. There is also a 100m stretch beside an A-road.

This walk deserves to be more popular. At point 9 the sign is no longer there. Instead pass via two obvious gates aiming for a large barn. At point 20. There is no barn. Instead pass to the LEFT of a ruined stone building
