Starting in the busy town centre at Kingston the walk soon joins the River Thames which is followed for the next 5 miles via the picturesque Teddington lock to Richmond.
Richmond provides a good opportunity for lunch with numerous pubs, cafes, restaurants and places to picnic. The walk then climbs up from the river with views over the Thames valley to enter Richmond Park. The park has been in royal hands since 1272 and just a few minutes in it's hard to believe you're so close to London. You will almost certainly see deer here which are remarkably tame.
Richmond Park is then left behind to enter the less manicured Wimbledon Common which is a pleasant mixture of open scrub and woodland. The walk loops across the common to a pretty windmill and then to Wimbledon Village. It’s then just a short route via back streets to Wimbledon town centre and the station.
