Kirk Yetholm - The Schil Circular, using the Pennine Way

We start our walk from the beginning and end of the Pennine Way at Kirk Yetholm. We leave the thatched-roof pub to walk along the road section into the foothills of the Cheviots. From here we start our climb along the low-level section of the Pennine Way that leads us up to the base of The Schil. Crossing the England / Scotland border fence we climb up to the rocky outcrop summit of The Schil. Here on clear days we are rewarded with some beautiful panoramic views over the border counties. Leaving the summit, we retrace our footsteps into Scotland and onto the high-level route of the Pennine Way that takes us over White Law, an exposed section with distant views, then down to reach the road that takes us back to Kirk Yetholm.

With personal transport 3km of road walking can be saved by parking on the left just after the cattle grid at the Halterburn. The Low Pennine Way has early interesting features and as it starts to rise more quickly there are views to the West. The rest at the Schil is very welcome. The return by the High (Main) Pennine Way produces superb panoramas with spectacular views to the East Coast and North Sea. After long descents the climb of White Law, late in the walk, comes as a surprise. Great walk.
