This is a mostly level walk following a former Forestry Commission Scotland-devised 'bird trail' in Kirroughtree Forest, within the Galloway Forest Park. Walk along good paths, tracks and forest roads, mainly in the open and embracing a wide variety of habitats. The massive bulk of the 2,331ft mountain Cairnsmore of Fleet looms large throughout. Within the six-and-a-quarter-mile walk are a couple of shorter alternatives of about three-and-a-half and five miles respectively.

Refreshments and all facilities are available at the new Kirroughtree Visitor Centre, your start and finishing point adjacent to the car park.

Information for Dog Owners: subject to the normal precautions to be observed by dog-owners when walking in sheep country, this walk is considered suitable for biddable dogs.
