The lake between Montriond and Ardent is picturesque just to stroll around, but this walk adds a decent climb through the surrounding woods and a visit to the impressive waterfalls at Ardent.
With our route you get the climb of around 300m over with at the start. It's a pretty relentless slog to Le Latay but on a hot day you are in the trees and you can catch glimpses of the 'green lake' below you and the cliff faces that tower over it.
The gentler descent to Ardent is on narrower paths and quite delightful, again through mixed broadleaved and pine forest. You pass by some old mountain chalets, a good place for a picnic.
The waterfalls at Ardent are crossed on a small footbridge so you get a good view down the long drop! Then it's down a track and through the meadows at les Albertans, now an outdoor centre.
Finally there's a leisurely stroll around the lake, either on the warm or shaded side - it's your choice. You can stop for a drink at one of the restaurants, both of which have magnificent views across the lake.
