A pleasant walk along a picturesque railway path starts the route from the former coalmining village of Langley Park. The route then starts to rise through fields past a very high former television transmitter to arrive at the village of Burnhope. The walk then descends slightly through woods and along lanes before rising again to arrive at Broom House Farm, where a popular Farm Shop, Coffee Shop and adventure play area are located. From here the route leaves the ridge and descends a pleasant enclosed lane, followed by more fields and another lane to arrive at the A691. The final lap is easy, flat walking along pavements and railway paths back to Langley Park.
