This route takes hill tracks between Scotland's two highest villages, former lead and gold mining centres, returning via the Southern Upland Way along the course of an old railway, which still operates steam engine rides from Leadhills Station on weekends in summer.
The Wanlockhead Beam Engine, The Museum of Lead Mining and the cafe in the tourist information centre, variously provide interest and sustenance at the walk's halfway stage.
