The walk starts from the small village of Leavening, located at the foot of the Wolds. The route follows farmland to reach Guild Wood, a Woodland Trust site of young oak-trees. As the walk progresses to Burythorpe, views of the Howardian Hills and the North Yorkshire Moors can be seen. The walk passes the tiny hilltop church at Burythorpe and this would make an ideal picnic stop, as there are some good views towards Ryedale and beyond. The village of Burythorpe follows, where a short detour is optional to view the cottages or to stop at The Bay Horse pub, an 18th Century inn. From here, Birdsall is next, an estate village with Birdsall House, ruins of an old church and estate grounds being seen along the walk. The walk leaves the village along quiet farm tracks before the slight ascent to Leavening Brow. From the top of the Wolds escarpment, extensive views of the Vale of York and the North Yorkshire Moors can be seen, as well as the majority of the walk route.

We saw no cafe, food shop or public toilets. The Jolly Farmers at Leavening is only open in the evenings except at weekends while The Bay Horse at Burythorpe is 'closed until further notice' but is by no means derelict. On the plus side there is a nice picnic bench by Burythorpe Church.
