It was no accident that the first Harvey Nichols to open outside London was in Leeds. A fascinating mix of old and new, this city has become 'the place' to live, work and visit in the north of England.

Starting at the railway station, this 'town trail' around Leeds City Centre visits many historical buildings and other points of interest, including (for those who like to combine shopping with walking) the first Harvey Nichols to open outside London. Also not to be missed is the Art Gallery. Allow yourself plenty of time!

After the tour of the City Centre, you may optionally enjoy a pleasant riverside stroll, from the famous Brewery Wharf out to the jewel in Leeds' crown, The Royal Armouries. You will, again, be well advised to allow plenty of time here.

We return to the station along the River Aire and with a brief (and optional) foray into the Holbeck area to look at some architectural curiosities. Although there is little else in Holbeck at the moment, over the next few years, this will develop into 'Holbeck Urban Village'. Because there is much development in this area, some photos may become out of date. Replacement photos are always welcome, along with comments describing the changes.

Although there are no dog-unfriendly obstacles en route, please be aware that many attractions will not admit dogs and that traffic can be heavy and pavements crowded in places.

Tricia Daw - 18-09-11 We did this walk on an unexpectedly sunny late Sunday morning parking near the Royal Armouries (in fact on the road near the student accomodation that is now there so no car park fee req'd). The area by the canal is now very much redeveloped with so much housing in the old canal warehouses - it's been done very well. The walk takes you past some very interesting and unusual buildings. It is well directed. There was the added bonus of a Farmer's Market in the road with Harvey Nix on. I was really pleasantly surprised by Leeds!
