Leicester was a very significant Roman town and has remained a significant settlement and crossroads ever since. Its heyday was in the 19th Century when it became the centre of Britain's hosiery manufacturing and one of Europe's wealthiest cities. Much of the architecture, both civil and industrial, that you will see on this walk derives from that period.
Whilst Leicester survived WWII largely intact, the planners got to work in the 1960s and 70s and proceeded to strangle the life out of the city with an insensitive ring road which severed key routes. In recent years, however, things have much improved, as the 'Connecting Leicester' project has linked parts of the city together again and the town centre has flourished.
The re-interment of Richard III in the cathedral seems at last to have put this underrated city on the tourist map.
