A linear walk from Lewes Railway Station through the historic and picturesque part of town known as Southover. Ashcombe Windmill is reached on a low brow in the approach to the village of Kingston. Next a brief and steep ascent onto the ridge for the stunning views over Lewes and the northern and eastern edges of the National Park. Soon more extensive views open up to the south of the cliffs at Seaford Head and the Cuckmere gap. We leave the South Downs Way at Swanborough Hill and commence a gradual descent on the paths and bridleways that contour down towards the windmill on Beacon Hill above Rottingdean. On reaching the coast road there's a frequent bus service west into Brighton and the railway station for trains back to Lewes. Alternatively, the super-fit could follow the undercliff path and walk into Brighton (extra four miles, not here described).
